Miles Arts Virtual Gallery in Second Life!

Miles Arts has officially entered into Second life. After acclimating and learning how to build, the construction of Miles Arts Virtual Gallery has begun. Screen shots of my initial design (which has since been scrapped) are below…

PHP / CSS Updates & NEW BLOG

I spent last weekend converting Miles Arts website pages from .html to .php. This allows the use of dynamic page rendering through include functions. I’ve also been optimizing/enhancing the semantic integrity of my pages by simplifying the sites HTML and CSS coding. Miles Arts blog is now officially live to the public.

So, what’s up?

Not much. I’ve been slowly plugging away at my personal site. Primarily, I’m mulling over how to create the navigation and overall organization. I feel at liberty to do whatever I want this time; ignoring standards, conventions and tested theories unless they fit in with my artistic vision. All the possibilities are a bit overwhelming…

Future Plans – Miles Arts Website

Miles Arts will be divided into at least three or more different websites. My plan (all along) has been to create multiple websites, each one specializing in a specific subject. For example, milesarts.com will be strictly business related, while milesofnature.org will be for my personal photo albums etc. and hedroncluster.com will be the official website for the band, Hedron.

Mac Peripherals Buggy in Windows XP

There are issues with the Mac monitor and iSight when running XP.

The monitor sometimes remains on (in a dark glowing mode…?) when you shut the computer down. The switches/buttons on the side were unresponsive. I had to boot back into Tiger to fix the issue.

iSight has terrible lighting. The image quality sucks. I was using Yahoo! Messenger’s video chat feature. (!) 4/10/07 – With some adjustments in the preferences I was able obtain a decent picture. Possible fix occurred when I reloaded XP and Drivers with iSight connected. Initially, I may have installed the drivers without the camera plugged in…?

Mac Pro – Time Clock Issues w/ Boot Camp

When I switch from XP to OS 10.4.8 the time clock on Mac it wrong. It is easily fixed by going to the preferences window…

4/9/07
This is still an issue. However, it appears to be intermittent which is an improvement…

Mac Pro – Sleep Problems

The computer has issues with sleep mode. It will go to sleep, screen goes blank etc. then it will immediately start back up again. It used to stick after the second consecutive try but it appears to much more sporadic than this. This morning I tried 4 times in a row and ended up just shutting down. The following site talks about this issuePro Tools does not support sleep mode. I wonder if this is the issue? I have disabled sleep mode on my computer 10/9/06 11:45 am

4/10/07 – This definitely appears to be an issue with peripherals and or applications. When everything is unplugged (for example, my iPod) sleep mode works just fine.

Office 2004 for Mac – Font Problems w/ Word

Reinstall didn’t fix the issue. Word for the older version Office X works just fine. I will just use this for the time being.

System Configuration / Preliminary List of Issues

It’s been approximately 2 and half weeks since I purchased the latest MacPro Workstation. I’ve already sold and delivered my last system for $1,000.00 to Josh. I’ll miss that computer. It was a last generation G4 Mirrored Drive Door PowerPC. Very reliable. We’d been through a lot together. Alas, updated technology (and my new job) brings me a newfound work horse.I love it. The current configuration is:

  • Two 2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon “Woodcrest” processors
  • 2GB memory (667MHz DDR2 fully-buffered DIMM ECC)
  • NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics with 256MB memory
  • 250GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s 7200-rpm hard drive
  • 500GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s 7200-rpm hard drive
  • 16x double-layer SuperDrive

I’ve successfully loaded Windows XP with Boot Camp (Beta). It appears to be working like a charm (very fast, very snappy). I haven’t used any memory intensive programs on the Windows side yet but I’ve read that it’s performance is outstanding. Initially, I was going to install parallels but decided to return the software because it doesn’t support DirectX. I have no need for DirectX but I’m not convinced that Parallels VM will produce an exact replica of the Windows XP environment.

Jack (our resident Mac tech at work) tells me that VMWare will be all rage in the next year or so. It enables a computer to run multiple operating systems (and or servers) simultaneously and yet they remain completely independent of one another. There are many advantages to this. For example, if one of several systems crashes – the stability of the others is completely unaffected. It’s so simple – almost stupid it hasn’t been done before.

And now for the real reason I started this category, to document the differences (issues) between the older (G4, G5) Macs and the new Intel Macs.

  1. Office 2004 for Mac – Word doesn’t handle fonts well or at all. At this point, the program crashes if I try to select a new font. There’s an interesting blog online about it. Apparently, I’m not the only one. I tried a couple of the proposed fixes to no avail. Reloading the software might fix it… Error message: “Cannot Locate the Microsoft Framework Library.”
  2. SecondLife will occasionally crash my entire system!! This is odd. Generally, a program will just quit instead of crash the entire operating system. Perhaps, it’s a faulty ram chip? More testing is in order… (!) 4/10/07 I purchased an ATI x1900 512 MB Graphics card to replace the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256 MB. These problems have completely stopped. I’m in love with this new card! It helps speed everything up and makes everything super clear. This fix may have also occurred because I reseated all the ram chips when installing the graphics card.
  3. DVD Player works okay but displays strange characters at the top of the window. (!) 4/10/07 Haven’t encountered this problem in a while now.
